Aeroklas, a Thai automotive parts manufacturer, is seeking new business opportunity to set up a production base in Latin-America.
Mr. Phairush Burapachaisri, vice chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Southeast Asia and Latin America Trade Center (SEA-LAC) at University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, told a BoI Fair 2011 seminar titled “Trade and Investment Opportunities in Latin America,” that Lain America is a new market serving as both an export market and investment opportunity. The region sees 48 countries with more than 600 million populations combined, similar to ASEAN markets.
Some Thai companies have already operated in the region, such as SCG and Betragro, for example. Latin America holds great potential to supply raw materials for different industries such as steel, crude oil, coal, natural gas, as well as agricultural crops. Latin America will become a new investment source for Thailand.
Ms. Supawadee Vitoorapakorn, deputy managing director of Aeroklas Co., Ltd., said her company is studying business opportunities to establish an automotive spare parts manufacturing base in Latin America. It’s likely to start with Mexico, where its automotive industry enjoys a strong growth. Mexico has several related industries for expansion and a strong labour base. Aeroklas has exported some of its products to sell in Mexico for the past 2-3 years and they have made significant achievement.
Latin America is very attractive and holds a lot of opportunities especially in spare parts industry because of the high market growth. In 2010, more than 5 million cars were produced among the Latin America countries. Brazil, for example, saw the release of 3.3 million cars, or 43 per cent growth. Argentina produced 690,000 cars, or 11 per cent growth. Chile sold 280,0000 units, or 63 per cent growth.
“Our companies have manufactured automotive spare parts and equipment in many bases in America and China. Our investment in the United States has recently been made. The Latin America markets are very interesting for trade and investment for us to expand,” she said
